WRC's Future is CLOSE! New Commercial Rights Holder Incoming! (2026)

The future of the World Rally Championship's commercial operations is on the cusp of a major shift! The FIA is nearing a significant announcement regarding a new commercial rights holder for the WRC, a move that has been the subject of much speculation. According to FIA Deputy President Malcolm Wilson, an agreement is "very close", and a formal announcement is anticipated within the next couple of months.

This development follows reports that the previous rights holder, WRC Promoter – a joint venture between Red Bull and KW25 – was preparing for a sale this year. WRC Promoter originally acquired these crucial commercial rights back in 2013. The FIA initiated a formal tender process last August to identify the best partner to steer the WRC's commercial future. Initially, the search attracted interest from a diverse range of potential buyers across Europe, America, and the Middle East. However, the process has now narrowed down, with due diligence currently underway with a suitor believed to be based in Europe.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has previously indicated that a completely new commercial rights contract will be established. This agreement could potentially span an impressive 25 years, and importantly, any funds generated from the sale of these rights by the FIA will be directly reinvested into the championship itself, aiming to boost its growth and development.

Speaking at the WRC season opener in Monte Carlo, Malcolm Wilson shared his optimism, highlighting that a potential partner with a long-term vision for the WRC has been identified. He described the process as "a really long process" and a "massive challenge", drawing on his extensive experience in company acquisitions. Wilson emphasized his personal commitment to securing the "right promoter for the future of the sport", underscoring the extensive due diligence conducted with prospective candidates.

But here's where it gets interesting: Wilson specifically sought a partner with "vision and longevity." He noted that many initial inquiries came from investment firms focused on shorter-term exits, typically five to seven years. While financially sound for them, Wilson's priority was to find an entity committed to the long-term growth and development of the WRC, aiming to elevate the sport to its full potential. He expressed confidence in the current direction, despite the process taking longer than initially planned, stating, "I'm very happy and I'm comfortable, but I want to get it over the line which I think it is very close." He added, "I am pushing like you have no idea, as it is so crucial for our sport moving forward."

And this is the part most people miss: A critical factor for the FIA in this selection is the establishment of a close working relationship between the governing body and the new commercial rights holder. Wilson stressed the necessity for the promoter to be geographically close to FIA headquarters in Geneva, or even based within the FIA, at least in the short term. This proximity is deemed essential for fostering collaboration, generating fresh ideas, and maintaining an open-minded approach to growing the sport.

What are your thoughts on this significant shift in the WRC's commercial landscape? Do you believe a 25-year contract is beneficial for long-term stability? Share your opinions in the comments below – we'd love to hear your perspective!
