Big news in the world of television! Reemah Sakaan, a seasoned expert in the streaming and content arena, has been appointed as the new president of 5, a prominent channel. This move signals a strategic shift and a strong focus on future growth.
Sakaan's official start date is set for January 27th. She will report directly to Kevin MacLellan, who holds the position of Paramount’s president for international and global content distribution. Her primary responsibility will be to lead the public service broadcaster (PSB) and steer its growth strategy, particularly in the ever-evolving world of streaming. Given her extensive experience with platforms like iPlayer, ITVX, and BritBox, Sakaan is well-equipped for this challenge.
Under her leadership, Ben Frow, 5’s chief content officer, along with the broadcaster’s commercial distribution and product teams, will report to her. She will also collaborate closely with Lee Sears, Paramount’s president of international ad sales.
Sakaan brings over two decades of experience in streaming, global content, and public service television. She was a founding member and the chief creative officer of BritBox when it launched in 2017.
She played a key role in expanding BritBox internationally, and in 2020, she was promoted to global chief executive officer. Under her guidance, the business saw an impressive 25% annual growth.
Sakaan's achievements also include negotiating supply deals with major players such as Amazon, Apple, Google, and Comcast. Furthermore, she commissioned and co-produced a variety of original British content for the streaming service, including popular shows like Irvine Welsh’s Crime, After the Flood, and Beyond Paradise.
Here's where it gets interesting... In 2024, Sakaan oversaw BBC Studios' acquisition of ITV's share in BritBox before stepping down in 2025.
Before her time at BritBox, Sakaan held significant roles, including director of marketing and media for ITV, where she helped launch ITV Hub, and head of marketing for BBC1, and was part of the launch team for iPlayer.
She takes over from Sarah Rose, who departed Paramount at the end of 2025 to become chief executive of The Royal Foundation.
MacLellan expressed his enthusiasm, stating that Sakaan brings a wealth of experience in streaming, content, and commercial strategy. Sakaan herself has expressed her admiration for 5's understanding of its audience, emphasizing its ability to resonate with viewers, advertisers, and UK creatives.
And this is the part most people miss... Sakaan was previously considered a strong candidate for the Channel 4 chief executive position, which was ultimately filled by Priya Dogra.
