The problem began with a simple mistake: officials in Maryland's Baltimore County issued incorrect trash and recycling collection calendars, leading to chaos and missed collections. Residents were provided with a helpful schedule before Christmas, but to their surprise, trash trucks were out on the streets on what was supposed to be a day off for waste workers.
"It's a complete mess!" exclaimed one frustrated homeowner. "We rely on these schedules to plan our waste management, and now we're left with overflowing bins and no idea when our trash will be collected."
But here's where it gets controversial... The county's printed pick-up schedule listed certain holidays, like Martin Luther King Jr. Day, as "slide" weeks, meaning collections would be adjusted. However, trash trucks were spotted on the streets on that very day, leaving residents confused and upset.
"I thought we were supposed to be off that week!" said a local resident. "It's like they're making it up as they go along."
And this is the part most people miss: the county has a unique system for holiday slide days. When a collection day falls on a holiday like Thanksgiving or Christmas, it "slides" to a later date. But with multiple errors in the printed calendars, residents were left in the dark, not knowing when to put out their trash.
