The Atlanta Falcons make a bold move to secure their defensive future!
FLOWERY BRANCH, Georgia — In a significant development, the Falcons have decided to keep Jeff Ulbrich as their defensive coordinator, despite a recent change in head coaching staff. This decision comes on the heels of hiring Kevin Stefanski as the new head coach, replacing the previous regime.
But here's the twist: Falcons owner Arthur Blank had previously stated that while he wouldn't impose his choices on the new coach, he highly recommended retaining Ulbrich. And it seems the new leadership agreed, as Ulbrich has signed a three-year deal to continue his role.
Ulbrich's journey with the Falcons is a fascinating one. He rejoined the team in 2025 after a four-year stint with the New York Jets, where he served as the defensive coordinator under Robert Saleh. Ulbrich even stepped up as the interim head coach after Saleh's departure in October 2024. This marks his second tenure with the Falcons, having previously coached the linebackers from 2015 to 2019 and briefly serving as the interim defensive coordinator.
And the impact of Ulbrich's return was immediate. The Falcons' defense underwent a remarkable transformation, adopting an aggressive style that led to a significant increase in production, especially in the pass rush. This shift in strategy paid off, as the team soared from the second-lowest ranked in sacks in 2024 to the second-highest in 2025. Pearce's 10.5 sacks, the most by a rookie since Micah Parsons in 2021, and Watts' five interceptions contributed to a historic achievement. The Falcons became only the second team in NFL history to have two rookies with 10 or more sacks and five or more interceptions, solidifying their defensive prowess.
The defense's overall performance was exceptional, ranking sixth in interceptions and seventh in total takeaways. The safety duo of Watts and Bates dominated with eight interceptions, a league-wide standout performance.
Veteran players like A.J. Terrell and Kaden Elliss also thrived under Ulbrich's guidance. Terrell's coverage skills were on full display, forcing tight-window throws on over 35% of his targets. Elliss, with his 30 pressures, ranked second among linebackers, showcasing his versatility.
The signing of inside linebacker Divine Deablo as a free agent proved to be a masterstroke. Deablo's adaptability and coverage skills, coupled with his tackling prowess, made him a valuable asset, even with an injury-shortened season.
